Government Security
Sometimes there are matters known only by a select few within our government because of national security. There is nothing wrong with such secrecy and, in fact, it is oftentimes necessary for our safety.
However, there are times when this shield can be abused and investigation becomes essential to preserve good and honest government.
Recently it was discovered that the Chief of the C.I.A.'s National Clandestine Service ordered the destruction of hundreds of hours of videotapes showing interrogation by top operatives of Al Qaeda. There are conflicting stories that the C.I.A. was told not to destroy the tapes and then others say the destruction was approved.
The destruction of these tapes could materially affect prosecutions of terrorists and no one knows how serious the damage could be.
Irrespective of how strongly we condemn the actions of Al Qaeda, we as a nation must adhere to our own constitution, including the right to receive a fair trial. The facts surrounding the destruction of the tapes do not fare well for the C.I.A.; however, we cannot waiver and abandon our principles.
A full complete and fair investigation must take place immediately to demonstrate to the world that the United States will consistently treat all persons fairly and will punish those who break the law - even if they are our own. |
